Quit Applications

When you exit an application, it's still running in the background. If an app snags, you can force quit it without having to reset the iPhone. To force quit an application:

  • Make sure you're in the app.
  • Hold the Sleep button on top until the Power Off switch appears.
  • Hold the Home button for about 8 seconds.

Home Really Goes Home

When you have a lot of Home screens, flipping to get to the first screen where most of us keep our most important apps can be tedious. Just press the Home button in an home screen and you're taken back to the first screen. Press it again and it calls up Spotlight to search your iPhone.

Moving Icons on the Home Screen

The iPhone Home screen is an electronic version of on of those slider puzzles. Move one icon and all go out of place.

The simple solution is to drag one icon to the right off the screen you want to add an icon too and place it on the last screen . This leaves a blank space as well as doesn't destroy all your other screens. Then drag the new icon in.

Tapping Through the Home Screen

If flicking is just not your style you can tap your way through the Home screens. Just tap the leftmost or rightmost page marker dots at the bottom of the screen.

Pausing an App While Loading

Apps for your iPhone can be huge. Edge and 3G have a download limit of 10 megs, which can take a while. If you need to pause the download to do something else at a faster speed:

  • Go to the Home screen where the app is loading. It will say "Loading" below it.
  • Tap the icon and it will show as "Paused".
  • When ready to start loading, tap the icon again.

Trouble: General

Any Issue For just about any issue, restart your iPhone by holding both the Home and Sleep button (top right) together for about 7 seconds. Ignore the prompt. The Apple logo will appear letting you know your iPhone has restarted. Your data is safe. This is equivalent to restarting your desktop computer. If this doesn't work, try restoring. After you have connected your iPhone to your desktop, wait for the sync to finish. Click on the Sync button. Let it finish again. Click on the Restore button.

App Frozen
Hold the Home button for about 6 seconds. This force-quits the app.

General Slugishness Like OSX, your iPhone can run many apps at once. For that matter, it's running all the apps you've started up since your last reset. You can exit apps you're not using by holding down the Home button while in that app. This will improve both speed and battery life. To turn off all apps at once, hold the Home and the Sleep button on the top right of your iPhone for about 10 seconds.

Make Sites iPhone Friendly w/ Web Clips

Web clips allow you to bookmark sites with an icon on your Home screen. This is very useful for those who use their iPhone for a dozen sites they regularly visit, since 16 will fit on their own page of your Home Screen. While this in itself is cool, the best function of these is that you can zoom in on a portion of a page. When you launch your Web clip from the Home screen it's pre-zoomed so you don't have to resize the page to read it. This trick works extremely well with Apple's discussion sites. If you zoom in on the top of the list of posts, they're legible without having to manually zoom or tap each time you go to the page. When you page back to this page, they remain zoomed in.

  • Go to a site you want to clip in your iPhone's Safari.
  • Tap or pinch to zoom in on the area you want to focus on.
  • Press the + button.
  • Choose Add to Home Screen.
It's convenient to create a second Home screen of Web clip icons so your top 16 sites are quickly accessible. Hold a newly-created web clip until it wiggles and drag it off the right side of the screen to the second page. Press the Home button when done.

Home Button

The main purpose of the Home button is to take you back to the Home screen with a quick press. But there are some secrets that make it very useful:

  • Hold Home and the Sleep button on the top right at the same time to reset the phone. (Your files will be safe.)
  • Press it to lock down your vibrating Home screen icons.
  • Press once to Go to the first Home screen, press it again to call up Search.
  • Double press and it goes to your fave list in Contacts. In Settings>General>Home you can alternately set it to call up the iPod, call up search, or call up your camera on a double press, .
  • When music is playing, even when the phone is locked, a double press calls up iPod controls. You can turn this off in Settings>General>Home.
  • When your iPhone is off, tap the Home button to show the time or to unlock the screen.

Add A 2nd Home Screen

Just tap and hold any icon to get it vibrating. Drag it off the right side of the screen. This creates a second page. When done press the Home button to lock the icons. To get to the second page on the Home screen, swipe right. You can add up to nine home screen pages. Pages left blank will disappear when you lock down the icons.

Rearrange Home Icons

You can reposition the icons on your Home screen. Just tap and hold any icon. When it starts vibrating, drag it any where you like. You can also drag the Phone, Mail, Safari and iPod icons onto the Home screen and replace them with apps you use more frequently. When done press the Home button to lock the icons.
